Alignment, Rotation and Balance
We know how important your car is to you. You trust it to to deliver you to your destination safely and without incident. Proper tire care is critical to your (and your vehicle’s) lifeline. That’s why this month, we’re delving into the topics of alignment, rotation and balance and the importance of keeping your tires well maintained.
Tire service: Alignment
The purpose of a tire alignment is to make certain the vehicle travels straight and without pulling to one side, as well as reducing tire wear. When your tires are aligned properly, they are restored back to the factory standards as closely as possible. It is recommended you should have your tires aligned when you purchase new tires, if you replace suspension or any steering parts, or after an accident or hitting a large pothole. Your tires should be aligned once a year.
Tire service: Rotation
Tire rotation is where the wheels and tires are moved from one position on the car to another to guarantee even wear of the tires. Having even tire wear is essential to uphold the life of the tire.
Depending on the vehicle, it is recommended that tires should be rotated every 5,000 miles. Having the best tires on the rear of the car is the important because if rear wheels lose grip of the road before the front ones, over-steering can occur.
Tire service: Balance
When your tires aren’t balanced, this can really throw your car off and can put a strong strain on the wheel bearing and suspension system of your car. It can also put uneven pressure on the treads and the tires will heat up too fast which will affect the wear to the point where they will be uneven. You will be able to tell if your tires need to be balanced if your car shakes or vibrates over 40 mph, but in most cases, you won’t be able to tell if your tires need to be balanced so the recommended time frame is between 4,000 and 6,000 miles.
Without proper care of your tires, tire failure is a potential hazard to you and the ones in your car. In most cases, tire failure occurs when the tread on the outer perimeter of the tire in time wears away. This happens when there is contact with the road, called friction. When the tread wears away, the tire should be replaced to ensure the safety of the people in the car.
